Buying Guide: Commercial Counter Top Burners
A counter top burner offers the flexibility to create a cookline anywhere. However, choosing the right unit isn't just about gas type; it's about **ergonomics** and **installation height**.
1. Critical: Height & Stands (Ergonomics)
Benchtop burners are typically 300mm–500mm high (including legs/flue).
- Don't put them on a standard bench (900mm): This would raise the cooking surface to 1300mm+, which is dangerous and too high for chefs to lift pans safely.
- Use an Equipment Stand: We recommend placing these units on a dedicated Stainless Steel Equipment Stand (approx. 600mm high). This brings the cooking surface back to a comfortable, standard working height (900mm).
- Custom Benches: For specific layouts (e.g., food trucks), we can advise on custom low-profile benching.
2. Burner Configurations (2 to 10 Burners)
- 2–4 Burners: Perfect for small cooklines, cafés, and satellite kitchens.
- 6–8 Burners: High-volume restaurant solution. Equivalent to a full range top but allows for under-bench storage (pots/pans) instead of an oven.
- 10+ Burners: Modular units can be banked together to create massive continuous cooktops for banquet halls or Asian kitchens.
3. Gas vs Electric
- Gas (NG/LPG): Fast heat response and strong flame output. LPG models are standard for food trucks and mobile catering.
- Electric: Stable, even heating. Ideal for sites with gas restrictions or where open flames are not permitted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a stand for my benchtop burner?
Unless you have a custom low bench (approx. 600mm high), yes. Placing a heavy commercial cooktop on a standard 900mm workbench makes it too high to use safely. We stock matching stainless steel stands with undershelves.
Do I need a canopy for a benchtop burner?
Yes. If you are using gas, or cooking food that produces grease/smoke on an electric unit, you must have a compliant extraction canopy under Australian Standards.
Can I connect these to LPG bottles?
Yes. Most commercial gas cooktops can be ordered as LPG or converted by a licensed gas fitter. This is the standard setup for food trucks and market stalls.
